Full professor of City and Regional Planning, at the Department Civil Engineering and Architecture of University of Catania where he has been the former Director. His main research interests include Urban Planning aimed at urban renewal and environmental remediation. He is President of the Regional Section of the Italian Urbanism Association and has been Technical Adviser of delegation for DG Foreign Affairs of EU Commission (Bruxelles) and expert in Development Co-operation of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Rome).
Francesco Martinico
Associate professor in Town and Regional Planning at the University of Catania. Interests in regional planning, planning of deprived areas and peripheries, land use management, Gis and planning of industrial estates.
He has been part of the research teams for the following plans/programs: Territorial Plan of Syracuse (Italy), Landscape protection Plans, Sicily, GRaBS (Green and Blue Space Adaptation for Urban Areas and Eco Towns), a program funded by European Union (INTERREG IVC), Special “Spatial Planning for Communities In All Landscapes” (Intelligent Energy Europe Program).
PhD in Urban and Regional Planning, he is Assistant Professor in Urban and Environmental planning at the Department Civil Engineering and Architecture of the University of Catania, where he teaches spatial planning. His research includes sustainable planning, Ecosystem Services, GIS applications for urban and landscape planning, environmental indicators, Environmental Strategic Assessment, Land cover analysis, landscape studies, landscape ecology, spatial analysis.
PhD in Urban and Regional Planning, he is Research Assistant at the Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture of the University of Catania.
His interests include sustainable planning, urban planning, urban design, integration between land use and transport planning. His recent works include different urban master plans for public administrations and he has participated in many national and international projects and several consulting activities and urban/regional/environmental plans as coordinator. He gives lectures in university courses and other short professional training courses on sustainable planning, urban planning and urban design.
Ph. D. in urban and regional planning, he is Research Assistant at the Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture of the University of Catania.
His scientific interests include non-urbanised areas planning, climate change adaptation and mitigation, ecosystem services, green infrastructures, land cover analysis, land suitability analysis, urban and periurban agriculture. He has participated in the European project “GRaBS – Green and Blue Space Adaptation for urban areas and eco-towns” (Interreg IVC programme)and currently working on the European SPECIAL project “Spatial Planning for Communities In All Landscapes” (Intelligent Energy Europe Programme). He offers lectures in university courses since 2007.
Valentina Palermo
Master Degree in Architectural Engineering, Valentina s recently completed a Ph.D. Course in ‘Evaluation and Mitigation of Urban and Land Risks’” at the Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture of the University of Catania. Her research interests focus on the evaluation of the role of urban areas to face climate change towards sustainability through C02 mitigation and energy efficiency of neighbourhoods. She is particularly interested in the relationships among energy intensive factors and the processes that occur in cities, through an interdisciplinary approach.
Master Degree in Building and Architectural Engineering, Viviana has recently completed a Ph.D. Course in ‘Evaluation and Mitigation of Urban and Land Risks’ at the Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture of the University of Catania. Her scientific interests include the role of ecosystem services and green infrastructure in urban areas, environmental impact assessment and the analysis of the interface between urban risk management and resilience planning in urban contexts. She is currently working on topics of urban pluvial flooding and sustainable urban drainage systems.
